Police Shootings, 2018––the Black and White of the Washington Post Data

with one comment

This is data collected by the Washington Post concerning on-duty police officers who have shot and killed a civilian. Herein are no facts concerning persons killed by means other than firing a weapon; nor is it about anyone killed after/while in Police custody.

According to the data collected yearly by the Washington Post, 992 persons in the United States were shot and killed by the police in 2018.

452 were White. This figure is 46% of all those shot and killed. 229 were Black, or 23% of those shot and killed were black. 164 of the 992 total were Hispanic; 40 were Other; 107 were unknown. For Hispanic, those figures include White and non-White Hispanic.

A total of 47 unarmed persons were killed; 33 were shot and killed while holding toy weapons––and having a toy weapon does not count as unarmed. 35 shooting incidents were recorded where information on armed or unarmed or otherwise was not available.

Of the 47 persons shot and killed by the police while unarmed, according to the database kept by the Washington Post, 23 were white, 18 were Black, 6 were Hispanic.

Of the 33 persons shot and killed while holding a toy weapon (which, again, is NOT being unarmed), 14 were White, 6 were Black and 9 were Hispanic.

38 persons were shot and killed, as it has been designated, while armed with their vehicle––13 of these were White and 14 were Black. Yes, driving your car makes you armed.

Other armed weapons include poles, tasers, rocks, pipes, flashlights and the like. On NOV 15, 2018, in Paradise California, GD Hendrix, a 48 year old White man was shot and killed while holding a pipe. Christopher William Parrish, was a 33 year old White man armed with a rock when he was shot and killed.

264 of the 452 White persons shot and killed by the police were armed with a gun. 123 of the 229 Black persons shot and killed by the police were armed with a gun.

213 of the 992 persons shot and killed by the police were suffering some form of mental illness. 113 of these were White; 36 were Black.
